Bangladesh Batters Lack Courage And Mindset Abroad, Admits Towhid Hridoy

Bangladesh stand-in captain Towhid Hridoy has launched a scathing assessment of his batting lineup following their disappointing exit from the UAE tri-series. The team suffered consecutive defeats against Afghanistan and Zimbabwe, culminating in a dismal showing where they were bowled out for just 160 runs by Afghanistan to miss out on the final altogether.

Hridoy did not shy away from addressing the glaring chasm between their home performances and their away record in white-ball cricket. While the side has historically enjoyed success on home pitches against major opponents, their inability to adapt to foreign conditions has severely derailed their recent international campaigns across the globe.

Batting Collapse Highlights Away Struggles

  • Bangladesh were skittled out for a meagre 160 runs against Afghanistan, losing the fixture by seven wickets with 87 balls remaining.
  • In their opening match of the tri-series against Zimbabwe, the team managed only 172 before crashing to a heavy 99-run defeat.
  • Hridoy pointed out that the batting unit plummeted to 28 for 4 within the seventh over against Afghanistan following a top-order collapse.
  • The skipper emphasized that professional players must adapt quickly to foreign conditions and discard a defensive mindset.

Mindset and Courage Lacking in Foreign Conditions

Expanding on the recurring failures, Hridoy pointed out that the root of the problem lies heavily in psychological approach rather than just technical flaws. He stressed that international cricket demands immense courage and proactive planning, noting that defensive mentalities invariably trigger rapid collapses from which the team struggles to recover. Despite winning series at home against prominent teams like Australia, New Zealand, and Pakistan earlier in the year, Bangladesh have failed to secure an away ODI series victory since May 2023 when they defeated Ireland.

The interim captain urged senior players to take accountability and shoulder responsibility when quick wickets fall, rather than letting panic spread through the entire dressing room. With the team suffering four defeats in five away ODIs this year compared to six wins at home, management and players alike face an urgent task to rectify these recurring issues before their next international assignment.
