Opening batter Ali Orr has signed a three-year contract with Middlesex after concluding a challenging spell at Hampshire. The 25-year-old moves to his third county side aiming to revitalize his red-ball fortunes across all formats under head coach Peter Fulton.
- Ali Orr joins Middlesex: The top-order batter agreed to a three-year deal after averaging 23.48 in 15 Championship games for Hampshire.
- George Bell secures Essex switch: The wicketkeeper-batter penned a two-year permanent contract after a decisive late-season loan stint from Lancashire.
- Glamorgan recruit Ben Mike: The seam-bowling allrounder confirmed a move following the expiration of his contract at Leicestershire.
- Somerset extend Thomas Rew: The newly called-up England international wicketkeeper signed a contract extension keeping him at Taunton until 2029.
Fresh Start for Orr at Lord’s
Orr had initially moved to Hampshire from boyhood club Sussex three years ago following a disagreement with director of cricket Paul Farbrace. While he enjoyed prolific scoring form in the 50-over One-Day Cup, his struggles in first-class cricket proved persistent, finishing with a modest first-class average across 15 County Championship appearances. Both the player and Middlesex management view the switch to Lord’s as a prime opportunity to fulfill his early promise as a prospective international opener. Fulton expressed confidence that the transfer will provide healthy competition at the top of Middlesex’s batting order.
County Circuit Sees Busy Roster Changes
Wednesday saw multiple English county clubs finalize significant personnel moves ahead of the 2027 season. Essex completed the permanent signing of former England Under-19 wicketkeeper George Bell from Lancashire on a two-year deal. Bell arrived at Chelmsford on an emergency loan when Jordan Cox was on international duty and both Michael Pepper and Simon Fernandes were sidelined through injury. Bell struck three crucial half-centuries to help Essex avoid relegation and collected the club’s September Player of the Month award.
Elsewhere, Glamorgan strengthened their squad by signing allrounder Ben Mike following his departure from Leicestershire, marking another chapter in his career after previous stints that included Yorkshire. Meanwhile, Somerset secured the future of Thomas Rew on a long-term deal through to the end of 2029. Rew earned a contract extension hot on the heels of receiving his maiden England call-up for the upcoming Twenty20 International series against Australia.
