Zimbabwe Opt to Bat First as Litton Das Ruled Out of Tri-Series Opener

India

Zimbabwe won the toss and elected to bat first against Bangladesh in the opening match of the tri-series at the neutral venue in Abu Dhabi. Stand-in captain Sikandar Raza called correctly at the toss, putting his side in to set a target in the opening fixture of the multi-nation tournament.

However, the pre-match headlines were dominated by Bangladesh squad concerns, most notably the absence of regular skipper Litton Das. The wicketkeeper-batter has been completely ruled out of the entire tri-series after suffering a right hip joint injury. In his absence, batter Towhid Hridoy has been named as the stand-in captain to lead the side through the campaign.

Team Changes and Lineup Adjustments

Bangladesh were forced into further tactical reshuffles beyond the captaincy change. Mehidy Hasan Miraz was also unavailable for selection after battling a fever for the last three days. As a consequence, the team management opted for a lengthened lower-order structure, promoting all-rounder Rishad Hossain up to the number eight batting slot. Fast bowler Hasan Mahmud made his return to the One Day International setup following a twelve-month absence, while Mustafizur Rahman retained his place in the bowling attack despite underwhelming displays during the Asian Games last month.

Zimbabwe Setup and Playing XIs

  • Zimbabwe Strategy: Opted to bat first with three specialist pace bowlers in the starting lineup.
  • Debut: Tafadzwa Tsiga was handed his debut cap and will take up wicketkeeping duties for Zimbabwe.
  • Bangladesh Playing XI: Tanzid Hasan, Soumya Sarkar, Saif Hassan, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Towhid Hridoy (capt), Mosaddek Hossain, Nurul Hasan (wk), Rishad Hossain, Shoriful Islam, Taskin Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman.
  • Zimbabwe Playing XI: Brian Bennett, Ben Curran, Brendan Taylor, Craig Ervine, Sikandar Raza (capt), Wessley Madhevere, Tafadzwa Tsiga (wk), Brad Evans, Wellington Masakadza, Newman Nyamhuri, Blessing Muzarabani.

Both teams are using this tri-series in the United Arab Emirates to build momentum and test squad depth ahead of upcoming international assignments. With key players missing on both sides, the early tactical decisions at the toss and the performance of fringe players are expected to play a decisive role in shaping the outcome of this opening encounter.
