Scotland and Hampshire fast bowler Brad Wheal has announced his immediate retirement from professional cricket at the age of 30 due to a recurring succession of debilitating injuries. The right-arm seamer concluded a decade-long professional career that saw him become a vital component of the Scottish bowling attack across multiple global tournaments and achieve significant domestic success in English county cricket.
- Brad Wheal took 51 wickets in 44 appearances during his international career for Scotland.
- The fast bowler represented his country at four separate T20 World Cups, most recently playing in India earlier this year.
- Wheal played for Hampshire from 2015, helping the county secure the One Day Cup in 2018 and the T20 Blast in 2022.
- His retirement was prompted by physical strain, which included four stress fractures in his back and recent knee surgery.
Career Highlights and Domestic Success
Wheal established himself as a reliable performer on the county circuit after joining Hampshire in 2015. His ability to generate movement and bowl important spells in white-ball cricket proved instrumental in their domestic silverware, contributing significantly to their 2018 One Day Cup triumph and their subsequent T20 Blast victory in 2022. On the international stage, his dependability made him an automatic selection for Scotland, highlighted by his presence at four T20 World Cups where he regularly challenged top-tier batting lineups.
Physical Toll and Final Farewell
Addressing his decision to step away from the game, the bowler explained that his body could no longer handle the rigorous physical demands required of a professional fast bowler. Having endured four separate back stress fractures alongside knee surgery, he acknowledged that stopping was the only viable option. Wheal expressed deep gratitude to his teammates, coaching staff, and the dedicated fans who followed Scotland’s campaign across the globe. He confirmed he will continue to follow the team closely from afar as a supporter.
