Indian wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan etched his name in the record books during the fifth and final T20I match against New Zealand at Seddon Park in Hamilton on Sunday. Returning to the playing eleven after missing consecutive fixtures due to a low-grade right adductor strain, Kishan produced a blistering knock of 61 runs from just 32 deliveries to power India’s total.

During his aggressive innings, the left-handed batsman surpassed fellow teammate Suryakumar Yadav to claim the record for the most T20I runs scored by an Indian batter in a single calendar year. Kishan’s prolific run tally reached 1,220 runs for the year, successfully overhauling Yadav’s previous benchmark of 1,164 runs established back in 2022. The stellar performance also helped the visiting side post a competitive total of 191 for 8 in their allotted 20 overs despite experiencing a late middle-order collapse.

Milestone Knock And Format Records

  • Ishan Kishan amassed 1,220 runs in the calendar year, surpassing Suryakumar Yadav’s previous Indian record of 1,164 runs set in 2022.
  • The explosive batter also crossed the major career milestone of 2,000 runs in the shortest international format during his innings.
  • Kishan achieved the 2,000-run milestone in 1,345 balls, making him the third-fastest Indian to reach the mark behind Abhishek Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav.
  • His crucial 61-run knock included five massive sixes and five boundaries before he was finally dismissed by pacers Blair Tickner and caught in the deep.

Context And Global Standings

On the global stage, Kishan currently sits in second place on the all-time list for most T20I runs in a single calendar year. Pakistan’s star wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan holds the absolute world record, having accumulated 1,326 runs during the 2021 season. Kishan’s aggressive assault was highlighted when he smashed New Zealand spinner Mitchell Santner for a convincing boundary through midwicket followed by a towering maximum to bring up his 14th career half-century in the format. India had earlier been asked to bat first after New Zealand won the toss in Hamilton, making key changes to their lineup with Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Varun Chakaravarthy returning to the playing combination.
