- South Africa were bowled out for 387 in their second innings, setting a target of 288.
- Wiaan Mulder scored an unbeaten 115, while Ryan Rickelton contributed 101 runs.
- Australia successfully chased 331 at the same venue against the Proteas back in 2002.
- The winner of this match will claim the top spot in the official ICC Test rankings.
Match Situation and Key Performances
The momentum of the match shifted dramatically during the middle sessions of day four as Rickelton and Mulder dug deep against a tiring Australian bowling attack. Both batters played with immense discipline to record their third and fourth Test centuries respectively. A late-order flourish saw Mulder share a stubborn final-wicket partnership with Kagiso Rabada, adding 36 crucial runs before the innings finally concluded in the last over of the day. Earlier, a collapse of 4-61 had threatened to derail the innings due to some careless dismissals, including run-outs and loose strokes.
What Happens Next on Day Five
Australia require 288 runs on the final day to secure a memorable victory, a target achieved only once before in fourth-innings chases at this historic ground. Historical data suggests the tourists have turned around their previous struggles in high-stakes run chases over recent years. However, pitch conditions are expected to deteriorate, with spinners already finding significant turn and variable bounce during the closing stages of day four. South Africa will rely heavily on veteran spinner Simon Harmer and their pace attack to defend the target and seal a dramatic series triumph.
