Indian cricket team star Rohit Sharma has revealed the fascinating story behind why he never got to wear his initial first-choice jersey number during his career. Known globally as the ‘Hitman’ for his explosive batting exploits at the top of the order, Rohit’s synonymous association with the number 45 actually stems from a series of amusing early-career availability constraints and a discussion with his mother.
The Early Days and Rahul Dravid’s Legacy
Recalling his formative cricketing days during an interactive media appearance, the veteran opening batsman explained that he originally fancied a single-digit jersey number when he first played competitive cricket in a registered kit. However, most preferred digits like 5, 8, and 9 were already claimed by teammates, leaving him with number 19.
- Rohit initially selected number 19 during his Under-19 playing days simply because it remained available.
- A teammate soon warned him that he could never retain number 19 if he advanced to the senior national team.
- The restriction existed because legendary batsman and captain Rahul Dravid firmly occupied the number 19 jersey for India.
- Faced with changing his digits, Rohit sought advice from his mother, who suggested number 9 before settling on 45.
Choosing Number 45 With Family Guidance
Realizing that senior team commitments barred him from continuing with his Under-19 preference, Rohit made a quick telephone call to his mother from his hotel room. While his mother initially recommended number 9 for good fortune, that digit was also unavailable, and he firmly rejected number 27. Looking at the numerical layout, he realized that digits 4 and 5 positioned adjacent to each other looked visually appealing and happened to mathematically sum up to 9 as well. This practical yet sentimental choice permanently established the legendary 45 branding that defines one of modern cricket’s most destructive modern openers across international formats.
