Italian Serie A rivals Inter Milan and AC Milan have officially unveiled the architectural designs for their new shared home, the Generali Stadium. The ambitious project is scheduled to replace the legendary San Siro venue starting from the 2031/32 football season.

The joint stadium project represents a massive investment of 1.2 billion euros by the two Milanese clubs, who previously paid 197 million euros to acquire the existing stadium property and surrounding parking infrastructure. Construction work on the modern arena is officially slated to begin in 2028.

  • New Capacity: The upcoming Generali Stadium will feature a seating capacity of 71,500 spectators, slightly smaller than the current 75,000 capacity of the aging San Siro.
  • Architectural Design: Designed by renowned architect Norman Foster and stadium specialist David Manica, the structure will be low in the body and rise up sharply behind the goals.
  • Steep Stands: Stands behind the goals will be built at a steep 37-degree incline to bring fans directly over the pitch and amplify acoustic roars.
  • Multi-Purpose Venue: Alongside club football fixtures, the multi-functional arena will host international rugby matches, American football games, and major music concerts.

Architectural Vision and Acoustics

During the official press presentation in Milan, the design team emphasized that capturing the unique atmosphere of the historic San Siro was paramount. Architect Norman Foster noted that the stadium is fundamentally a feeling rather than just a building, guiding their commitment to preserving that emotional core in the new arena.

Specialist David Manica detailed that spectator proximity was prioritized above all else during planning. The seating tiers have been pushed as close to the turf as physically possible to ensure fans feel completely immersed in the action. Furthermore, the roof structure has been engineered to cover all spectator stands while leaving the pitch exposed, specifically trapping and amplifying the passionate roars of the home supporters.

The Legacy of San Siro

Opened back in 1926 and often described as a concrete cathedral of European football, the San Siro remains the largest stadium in Italy. Despite undergoing multiple modernization projects over the decades, the historic venue no longer satisfies modern commercial and spectator requirements for two of Europe’s biggest football clubs.

Once construction of the new state-of-the-art Generali Stadium nears completion on the adjacent land, the original Giuseppe Meazza Stadium will be largely demolished. Both clubs anticipate that the ultra-modern facility will successfully safeguard their financial competitiveness and matchday revenue streams for decades to come.
