New Zealand batter Glenn Phillips delivered a stunning exhibition of power-hitting during the fourth T20I against India in Auckland, hammering 32 runs in a single over bowled by all-rounder Nitish Reddy. The explosive right-hander raced to a magnificent century off just 46 deliveries, anchoring his side’s charge toward a mammoth total in the ongoing bilateral series encounter.
The carnage unfolded during the 16th over of the New Zealand innings when Reddy struggled with his lengths under intense pressure. Phillips capitalized immediately, launching an aggressive assault that featured a flurry of boundaries and maximums to leave the visiting bowling attack completely rattled on a challenging evening.
Over Breakdown and Unwanted Milestone
- Phillips started the over by collecting a boundary off a waist-high no-ball before running a quick couple.
- The Kiwi star then launched three consecutive deliveries over the ropes for massive sixes, targeting the extra-cover and long-off regions.
- He finished the eventful over with yet another maximum, taking 32 runs in total from the six legitimate deliveries and the extra.
- Reddy’s expensive spell entered the record books as the joint second-most expensive over conceded by an Indian bowler in T20I history.
Match Context and Historical Significance
The 32-run over equaled the unwanted record previously set by Stuart Binny, who leaked an identical number of runs against the West Indies back in 2016. The record for the most runs conceded by an Indian bowler in a single T20I over remains with Shivam Dube, who gave away 34 runs against New Zealand in Mount Maunganui in 2020.
Riding on Phillips’ phenomenal knock of 107 runs from 49 balls, New Zealand piled up their highest-ever T20I total of 259/7 in their allotted 20 overs. The aggressive approach completely overwhelmed the Indian bowlers, setting up a daunting target and leaving the visitors searching for answers in the death overs of a high-scoring thriller.
