Four Indian Premier League franchises have reportedly initiated preliminary discussions to secure Gautam Gambhir for a coaching or mentorship role ahead of the tournament’s 2028 season. While Gambhir currently serves as the head coach of the Indian national cricket team under a contract running until the 2027 ODI World Cup, his strong tactical reputation has prompted rival teams to plan for his eventual return to domestic franchise cricket.
Franchise Interest and Current Contract Status
Gambhir’s current national assignment places him in New Zealand alongside the Indian squad for an ongoing T20I series. Despite his commitments to the national side and potential discussions regarding an extension through the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, domestic team management groups are eager to lock down his services early. Representatives from Gambhir’s camp have already engaged in initial talks with Rajasthan Royals alongside his former franchise, Kolkata Knight Riders.
- Four distinct IPL franchises have tracked Gambhir for a prospective 2028 mentorship position.
- Preliminary discussions have already been held with at least one participating team.
- Gambhir previously led the Kolkata Knight Riders to an IPL championship victory during the 2024 campaign.
- His managerial pedigree also includes guiding the Lucknow Super Giants to consecutive playoff appearances in 2022 and 2023.
Background and Managerial Track Record
Gambhir established his credentials as a master tactician through successful stints with both Lucknow Super Giants and Kolkata Knight Riders before taking over the national side from Rahul Dravid. His tactical awareness helped KKR end a ten-year championship drought by claiming the 2024 trophy under the captaincy of Shreyas Iyer. Following his departure to manage India, both of his former franchises experienced notable slumps in subsequent seasons, highlighting his immense value as a leader. Whether the Board of Control for Cricket in India moves to extend his tenure beyond the upcoming global tournament remains the pivotal factor dictating when these franchises can formally secure his signature.
