Star batter Beth Mooney has officially taken over the captaincy of the Perth Scorchers from long-serving leader Sophie Devine ahead of the twelfth season of the Women’s Big Bash League. Mooney, who moved to the franchise from the Brisbane Heat in 2020, admitted that stepping into the prominent role felt a little bit daunting but expressed deep excitement for the challenge ahead. The team is aiming to bounce back strongly after falling just short in the previous year’s title decider against the Hobart Hurricanes, where they narrowly missed out on adding a second trophy to their cabinet.
Leadership Transition and Legacy
Sophie Devine led the franchise with distinction for six years, guiding them to their maiden championship title back in 2021 and establishing herself as their most-capped overseas player with 77 appearances. Head coach Becky Grundy praised Devine’s immense contribution to building a resilient team culture while welcoming Mooney into the leadership hotseat. Mooney brings a wealth of experience, boasting an impressive tournament record as the leading run-scorer in the competition’s history with 5,600 runs across her stints with both the Heat and the Scorchers.
