Star batter Saif Zaib has officially left Northamptonshire despite having a year remaining on his contract, with sources confirming he is set to join Hampshire ahead of the upcoming county season. The 28-year-old batsman informed his former club at the conclusion of the summer campaign that he did not see his long-term career path with them, prompting talks that ultimately failed to reverse his decision to move on.
Squad Rebuilding and Promotion Ambitions
Hampshire have secured Zaib as part of an aggressive recruitment drive following their relegation from Division One of the County Championship. The club is targeting an immediate return to the top flight, bolstered further by the arrivals of Rishi Patel from Leicestershire and Fynn Hudson-Prentice from Sussex. These acquisitions are designed to help fill the considerable leadership and run-scoring void left by the recent red-ball retirements of experienced campaigners James Vince and Liam Dawson.
- Prolific Form: Zaib was the leading run-scorer across the country in 2025, plundering 1425 Championship runs at an impressive average of 64.77, which included six centuries.
- Consistent Output: During the most recent summer, he added another 856 runs at 42.80 with three hundreds as Northants narrowly missed out on promotion.
- White-Ball Success: Alongside his red-ball contributions, Zaib was an integral member of the Northamptonshire squad that triumphed in the T20 Blast competition.
- Global Circuit: The left-hander spent time playing for Southern Brave in The Hundred and has since expanded his franchise portfolio internationally in leagues across Canada and Nepal.
Reflecting on a Memorable Tenure
In a heartfelt statement released by Northamptonshire, Zaib expressed deep gratitude for his time at the club, acknowledging the lasting friendships, unforgettable memories, and passionate support from the fanbase throughout his career. His departure marks the end of a significant chapter for the county side, while offering Hampshire a proven, high-impact middle-order batsman capable of dictating terms in multi-format domestic cricket as they chase glory in the upcoming campaign.
