Bangladesh reached 96 for 2 at lunch on the opening day of the first Test against West Indies in Dhaka on Wednesday, after electing to bat first upon winning the toss. Opener Shadman Islam anchored the innings with an unbeaten 42 off 82 balls, steering the hosts through a morning session that offered early rewards for the bowling side on a pitch traditionally favorable for run-scoring.
Morning Session Action
- Bangladesh finished the first session at 96 for 2 after 29 overs, maintaining a run rate of 3.31.
- Shadman Islam batted resiliently through the morning, hitting five boundaries to remain not out on 42.
- Jayden Seales drew first blood for West Indies in the seventh over by dismissing Tanzid Hasan for a low score.
- Jomel Warrican removed Mominul Haque for 28 just before the break, ending a promising 59-run partnership.
Partnership and Recovery
After losing Tanzid early to an edge behind off Seales, Shadman found a steady partner in Mominul Haque. The pair put together 59 runs for the second wicket, neutralizing the initial bowling threat with sensible stroke play and rotating the strike effectively. Mominul looked comfortable at the crease before chipping an uncharacteristic shot off spinner Jomel Warrican to Shamar Joseph at mid-off in the 22nd over. Following Mominul’s departure, captain Najmul Hossain Shanto walked to the middle and played positively, scoring an unbeaten 15 from 20 deliveries with one boundary against debutant Joshua Bishop. Bangladesh were forced into two changes before the start of the match, leaving out Mushfiqur Rahim due to a finger injury sustained during training, while Shoriful Islam also came into the side. West Indies handed a Test debut to left-arm spinner Joshua Bishop, who replaced Kemar Roach in the starting lineup. Both unbeaten batsmen will return after the lunch interval aiming to solidify the innings and build a substantial total for the home side in the opening match of the series.
