Kylian Mbappe struck twice to secure a dramatic 2-1 victory for Real Madrid against La Liga leaders Barcelona at Camp Nou on Sunday. The French superstar netted his tenth league goal of the season before the interval and added an 87th-minute winner to inflict the hosts’ first domestic defeat of the campaign.
The high-stakes fixture delivered intense action from start to finish, with both sides trading blows in front of a packed stadium. Real Madrid remained resilient under manager Jose Mourinho, overcoming the absence of key personnel including goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois to claim their fifth consecutive win across all competitions and narrow the gap at the top of the table to just three points.
Match Situation and Key Turning Points
The clash began in cautious fashion before Mbappe broke the deadlock shortly before half-time by capitalizing on a defensive clearance. Barcelona fought back strongly after the break, with Raphinha equalizing in the 63rd minute by firing through Jude Bellingham’s legs past goalkeeper Andriy Lunin. However, late defensive lapses proved costly for the Catalans. Substitute Gabriel Jesus lost possession in midfield, allowing Eduardo Camavinga to surge forward and unselfishly set up Mbappe for his second goal into an empty net.
- Kylian Mbappe opened the scoring before half-time and netted the 87th-minute winner.
- Raphinha equalized for Barcelona just past the hour mark with his 13th league goal.
- Andriy Lunin stepped in for Thibaut Courtois and made crucial saves for Real Madrid.
- The 2-1 result cuts Barcelona’s lead at the summit of La Liga to only three points.
What Happens Next in the Title Race
This result blows the Spanish domestic title race wide open, handing Hansi Flick’s side their second consecutive loss following a midweek Champions League setback against Paris Saint-Germain. Barcelona still hold the upper hand in the standings after winning their opening nine matches, but Real Madrid’s momentum under Mourinho suggests a fierce battle ahead for supremacy in Spain.
