Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann have emerged as leading contenders to take over at Manchester United if current manager Michael Carrick is dismissed. Carrick’s position at Old Trafford is under severe threat following a dismal start to the current campaign, prompting club hierarchy to quietly evaluate potential successors for the dugout.
Both Howe and Nagelsmann are currently unattached and feature prominently on the shortlist of prospective candidates, alongside serial winner Antonio Conte. The club’s leadership is reportedly drawing up contingency plans as pressure mounts on the former midfielder following a string of disappointing results across all competitions.
Potential Successors in Focus
- Eddie Howe: The former Newcastle United boss is fully open to taking the role after leaving his position in July following five successful years in the North East.
- Julian Nagelsmann: Available after stepping down from his role as Germany head manager following the conclusion of the World Cup tournament last summer.
- Antonio Conte: The experienced Italian coach is interested in a return to English football, having previously won the Premier League title with Chelsea in 2017.
- Unai Emery: Highly admired by Old Trafford chiefs for his work at Aston Villa, though a move would be financially and contractually complicated with his deal running until 2029.
Managerial Uncertainty at Old Trafford
Should the club hierarchy pull the trigger on Carrick, they will immediately begin the search for their eighth permanent manager or head coach since legendary boss Sir Alex Ferguson stepped down back in 2013. Other names such as Aston Villa’s Unai Emery and Brighton’s Fabian Hurzeler are also admired within the club, though extracting them from their current employers would prove extremely difficult.
The hierarchy continues to monitor developments closely while the team prepares for its upcoming fixtures, with supporters eagerly awaiting formal announcements regarding the coaching staff’s future direction.
