West Indies head coach Daren Sammy has challenged his Test squad to use on-field success as the primary vehicle to improve their financial well-being. Speaking ahead of their crucial two-match series in Bangladesh, Sammy emphasized that stronger performances in the ongoing World Test Championship cycle can unlock vital financial incentives and help lift the team out of their current ranking predicament.
The comments arrive in the wake of financial restructuring implemented by the governing body, which recently introduced a 25 percent reduction in retainer fees for players. Despite these adjustments, Sammy expressed confidence in the group’s resilience, pointing to encouraging white-ball displays during their recent tour of India as proof of the squad’s dedication to lifting the standard of Caribbean cricket.
Challenging the Red-Ball Squad
- Financial Incentive: Sammy reminded players that finishing inside the top five of the World Test Championship offers substantial prize money and extra incentives.
- Negotiation Power: The coach stressed that consistent performances will put the team in a stronger position to attract future sponsors and improve player remuneration.
- Building Momentum: West Indies head into their final assignments of the cycle looking to build on an undefeated Test record throughout the calendar year.
- Preparation Camp: The squad underwent intensive red-ball training in Chennai to ensure players are fully acclimated for the turning tracks in Bangladesh.
Looking Ahead to the Bangladesh Series
With ten possible days of Test cricket remaining in the current cycle, the squad has a final opportunity to secure a top-five finish. West Indies have avoided losing a Test series so far this year, securing a 1-0 series victory against Sri Lanka and a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Pakistan. Sammy believes that the meticulous preparation undertaken at specialized facilities in India will translate into competitive performances on the field as they face Bangladesh in the upcoming opening Test starting on Wednesday.
