Ballon d’Or Ceremony and Contenders
Spanish icon Alexia Putellas is widely considered the firm favourite to secure her third women’s Ballon d’Or trophy at Monday’s upcoming gala event. The midfielder captained Barcelona to a domestic quadruple in May, highlighting a period of remarkable success for Spanish women’s football on both the club and international stages.
While Putellas boasts impressive numbers from the previous campaign, a competitive 30-strong shortlist features several formidable international challengers looking to end Spain’s stranglehold on the prestigious individual accolade.
- Alexia Putellas scored 21 goals and provided 13 assists during Barcelona’s dominant domestic and European campaign.
- Manchester City forward Khadija Shaw enters the race after scoring 21 league goals to secure the WSL title.
- Arsenal striker Alessia Russo recorded nine goals in the Champions League to earn her place among the nominees.
- Poland striker Ewa Pajor scored 11 goals in 10 Champions League matches, including a hat-trick in the final.
Context and Global Representation
Spain’s immense representation on the shortlist underscores the country’s current supremacy in the women’s game. Having captured the World Cup in 2023 and the Nations League crown, Spanish clubs and national team players continue to set the benchmark globally. Barcelona have featured in seven of the past eight Champions League finals, cementing their status as the world’s most dominant club side. Even with Putellas now plying her trade in England with London City Lionesses, her past season output keeps her at the forefront of voters’ minds.
Despite the high-profile European contenders, critics continue to point out scheduling conflicts that sideline players from leagues such as the NWSL. Because the American season operates on a different calendar, top talents like Trinity Rodman miss out on consideration. Nevertheless, the voting panel of international journalists from the top 50 FIFA-ranked nations will decide the winner based on individual brilliance, collective success, and fair play across the evaluation window.
