Manchester United head into Sunday’s crucial Women’s Super League derby against league leaders Manchester City boasting a remarkable turnaround in form following a difficult start to the campaign. Manager Eva Olid’s side struggled initially to adapt to a high-risk, possession-heavy tactical approach, failing to secure a victory in their opening three league fixtures and suffering a heavy defeat against Chelsea. However, a tactical reset that balanced the new system with familiar defensive organisation sparked an impressive winning run across all competitions.
Tactical Realignment and On-Field Growth
The turning point for the team arrived during a hard-fought draw against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium, which provided a solid foundation for subsequent fixtures. Olid acknowledged that the squad tried to implement too many changes too quickly, prompting a return to core strengths, particularly defensive stability. That adjustment immediately translated into dominant statistics on the pitch.
- Won six successive matches in all competitions following their early season struggles.
- Climbed to fifth place in the WSL standings, sitting eight points behind unbeaten leaders Manchester City.
- Quadrupled their total shots from 10 to 42 across a three-match winning sequence.
- Significantly increased final-third passing efficiency and aerial duel success rates.
Off-Pitch Discussions and Derby Motivation
Behind closed doors, honest conversations involving players and coaching staff proved vital following the heavy reverse against Chelsea. The international break offered a crucial window for the new manager to reorganise backroom staff, integrating assistant coach Jose Herrera and Gavin Beith. Individual players have also rediscovered their best form, with vice-captain Ella Toone responding to a recent international omission by finding the back of the net, and captain Maya le Tissier returning with renewed energy from national team duty. Olid hopes this momentum will provide the necessary spark as her side prepares to face their cross-town rivals in search of another statement result.
