Former Pakistan captain Shan Masood is facing serious uncertainty over his international future as reports indicate he fears selectors may use a recent calf muscle injury as justification to drop him from the Test squad. The 37-year-old left-handed opening batter sustained the injury during a domestic first-class fixture and is currently in a race against time to prove his fitness ahead of the upcoming red-ball assignments.

Masood was removed from the Test captaincy three months ago following a difficult tenure between December 2023 and 2026, during which Pakistan suffered 12 defeats in 16 matches under his leadership. While the experienced campaigner is confident of recovering before the series begins on November 9, team management is reportedly looking toward the future of the red-ball setup.

Selection Strategy and Young Talent

  • Calf Injury Concern: Masood is worried selectors will leverage his recent fitness setback to exclude him from the squad.
  • Transition Phase: Interim red-ball coach Mike Hesson and selectors are keen to blood younger players for upcoming cycles.
  • Domestic Performers: Young openers like Abdullah Fazal and Sameer Minhas are pushing strongly for national selection.
  • Series Schedule: Pakistan is set to host Sri Lanka for a warm-up match starting November 4, followed by Tests in Rawalpindi and Lahore.

Looking Ahead to the Sri Lanka Series

Despite the uncertainty surrounding his place in the playing XI, Masood remains a respected figure within the dressing room and maintains a positive working relationship with the coaching staff. His immediate goal is to overcome his fitness hurdles, earn selection for the upcoming fixtures, and secure an appropriate platform to extend his red-ball career before a planned departure from the format.

Pakistan has already been eliminated from contention for the final in the current ICC World Test Championship cycle, prompting management to shift focus toward building a revamped squad for future international commitments.
