Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho has insisted that drawing direct comparisons between his squad and Spanish champions Barcelona is entirely unfair ahead of Sunday’s crucial La Liga El Clasico showdown. Barcelona enter the weekend sitting at the top of the league standings and holding a six-point advantage over third-placed Real Madrid, despite recently suffering their first defeat of the campaign against Paris Saint-Germain.
Mourinho took over at the Santiago Bernabeu during the summer following a barren two-year spell without a major trophy for the capital club. In contrast, Hansi Flick’s Barcelona side secured back-to-back league titles and boast a much more stable, established squad structure. The Madrid boss emphasized that his team is still in the early stages of a developing project after only a few months of working together.
Project Timeline and Expectations
Addressing reporters ahead of the fixture at Camp Nou, Mourinho pointed out the unrealistic expectations placed on his players. He noted that people often view his side as a finished product simply because of recent positive results, including a dominant 4-1 victory over RB Leipzig in Europe.
- Jose Mourinho stated that his squad has only been working together for a couple of months once pre-season arrivals and international breaks are accounted for.
- Real Madrid trail league leaders Barcelona by six points heading into Sunday’s high-profile fixture at Camp Nou.
- Barcelona suffered their first defeat of the season against Paris Saint-Germain prior to the upcoming weekend clash.
- Mourinho confirmed he will not alter his tactical setup or disregard his team’s core principles to specifically man-mark star teenager Lamine Yamal.
Tactical Approach Against Star Talents
The veteran Portuguese coach also discussed how he plans to manage in-form Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal, who has enjoyed a stellar run of form and is nominated for major individual honors. While acknowledging the 19-year-old Spain international’s immense quality and the respect he commands, Mourinho firmly stated that Real Madrid will stick to their foundational footballing identity rather than panic and overhaul their tactical structure to neutralize a single opponent.
Both clubs step onto the pitch with contrasting pressures. While Barcelona look to bounce back immediately from their continental setback, Real Madrid aim to capitalize on their recent four-match winning streak across all competitions to narrow the gap at the summit of the table.
