Australia captain Pat Cummins has admitted his side cannot paper over the cracks following a heavy innings defeat against South Africa in the second Test at Gqeberha. The tourists were made to follow-on after collapsing to 99 in their first innings, ultimately suffering a defeat by an innings and 31 runs to leave the series tied at one-all heading into the final match in Cape Town.
Cummins stressed that while the team would take time to let the initial emotions of the loss subside, critical questions must be answered regarding their batting depth and consistency. Australia lost 19 wickets across two days, putting immense pressure on senior members of the lineup ahead of the series decider.

Selection Scrutiny and Batting Struggles
The spotlight has fallen heavily on several players, including experienced batter Marnus Labuschagne, who has failed to pass fifty in his last 14 Test innings, alongside recalled opener Nic Maddinson. Despite reaching starts, the inability of the top order to convert has continually exposed the middle order and forced the team to rely heavily on individual resistance, such as Travis Head’s second-innings century and Scott Boland’s marathon effort with the bat.
Looking Ahead to Cape Town
With Cameron Green expected to be available for the final fixture, team management faces difficult selection choices. Cummins noted that losses can serve as a catalyst for necessary introspection, warning that wins often mask underlying issues that need immediate attention if Australia wish to maintain their competitive edge in the World Test Championship.
