Former India leg-spinner Amit Mishra has opened up about the abrupt conclusion to his international career, claiming that leadership assurances regarding his national team comeback were left unfulfilled. The veteran spinner revealed that both former head coach Anil Kumble and then-captain Virat Kohli assured him of a recall once he recovered from a leg injury sustained during a 2017 T20I match against England in Bengaluru, which ultimately marked his final appearance for the country.

Speaking during a podcast appearance, Mishra detailed how initial conversations with the team management filled him with confidence about returning to active contention. However, the situation deteriorated rapidly upon his full recovery, as subsequent attempts to communicate with the skipper regarding his future in the squad went completely unanswered.

Broken Promises and Ignored Calls

  • Final Appearance: Amit Mishra played his last international game for India during the T20I fixture against England in 2017 at Bengaluru.
  • Initial Assurances: The leg-spinner stated that coach Anil Kumble and captain Virat Kohli both promised a seamless return upon regaining full fitness.
  • Unanswered Messages: Mishra claimed that after recovering, Kohli promised to update him within a week to ten days but never responded to subsequent phone calls and text messages.
  • Double Standards: The veteran also expressed frustration that other players who suffered far more severe injuries were immediately accommodated upon recovery, unlike his situation.

Reflections on Team Management and Omission

Mishra expressed deep disappointment over the lack of communication from the leadership group during a critical juncture of his playing career. Despite making multiple follow-up calls and attempting to seek clarity from the team hierarchy, the lack of a formal response forced him to accept his exclusion from the setup. The spinner noted that while injuries are an unfortunate part of professional sports, the absence of transparency from key decision-makers left a bitter end to his years representing the national side in international cricket.
