South Africa staged a remarkable turnaround on the final day of the second Test in Gqeberha, defeating Australia by an innings and 31 runs to level the multi-match series at one-all. After suffering a heavy 214-run defeat in the opening encounter in Durban, the hosts bounced back decisively, overcoming a rain-affected opening session on day five to shatter Australia’s resistance as the light faded.
Travis Head put up a valiant fight for the visitors with a brilliant century, scoring 121 runs, while Scott Boland occupied the crease for 166 deliveries to grind out 40 runs in a stubborn bid to save the match. However, South Africa’s disciplined bowling attack kept applying relentless pressure. Premier fast bowler Kagiso Rabada finished with figures of 4-77, while all-rounder Wiaan Mulder claimed three crucial scalps, including Head, Boland, and Australian captain Pat Cummins, to dismantle the middle and lower order.
