Groundstaff at Lords have taken the drastic step of digging up Pitch Nine following years of scrutiny and an unsatisfactory rating from the International Cricket Council. The iconic venue at cricket’s spiritual home initiated the major overhaul earlier this month after recurring complaints regarding slow and low bounce, which culminated in a difficult surface during England’s Test match against New Zealand in June.
During that fixture, erratic bounce made batting extremely hazardous, drawing sharp criticism from England captain Ben Stokes and a demerit point from the governing body. The MCC subsequently launched a comprehensive pitch action plan, bringing in external experts to completely reconstruct the troubled 22-yard strip by filling the excavation with a base layer of gravel and fresh soil.
Key Developments at Lords
- Pitch Nine Overhaul: The central strip was completely excavated over a five-day period and refilled with gravel and new soil.
- Long-Term Absence: Pitch Nine will remain out of commission for high-profile matches until at least the year 2029.
- ICC Sanction: The surface received an unsatisfactory rating following the England-New Zealand Test in June.
- Hybrid Solutions: The club is expanding its use of hybrid pitches and testing drop-in trays on the Nursery Ground.
Future Schedule and Hybrid Pitch Trials
MCC chair Mark Nicholas warned club members to brace for upcoming scheduling challenges while the square undergoes its most comprehensive review in a generation. With Pitch Nine out of action for several seasons, Lords is accelerating its adoption of alternative technologies. A third hybrid pitch, combining natural grass with synthetic fibres, will be added to the square ahead of the spring season to help alleviate fixture congestion.
Additionally, the club is pressing forward with plans to introduce drop-in surfaces, with the first trays being installed on the Nursery Ground soon. These innovations aim to modernize pitch preparation at the historic venue ahead of upcoming major fixtures, including the men’s Test against Bangladesh and the upcoming series against Australia.
