Former Indian left-arm spinner Murali Kartik has strongly endorsed Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s recall to the national T20I side, arguing that a player’s age is irrelevant as long as performance remains high and they pose no liability on the field. Bhuvneshwar initially earned a recall for the upcoming five-match T20I series in New Zealand starting on October 22, before being drafted into the playing eleven for the rained-out fifth T20I against the West Indies in Bengaluru.
Kartik praised the veteran seamer’s modest demeanor and consistent execution across tough phases of the game, highlighting his instrumental role in helping Royal Challengers Bengaluru secure consecutive Indian Premier League titles in 2025 and 2026. The former cricketer noted that the experienced pacer simply focuses on performing his duties without seeking unnecessary attention or boasting about his achievements.
Key Highlights of the Selection Discussion
- Age No Bar: Murali Kartik stressed that veteran players should remain in contention if they maintain adequate fitness and mobility on the field.
- IPL Consistency: Bhuvneshwar delivered standout bowling performances across all phases and conditions during successive title-winning campaigns.
- Scrutiny on Comebacks: Kartik acknowledged that making a return to international cricket past the age of thirty brings intense media spotlight and mounting pressure.
- Broader Squad Dynamics: Discussions also touched upon the fitness of wrist spinner Varun Chakaravarthy and the promising emergence of all-rounder Naman Dhir.
What Lies Ahead for the Veteran Pacer
While the recall offers a fresh lease of international life, Kartik cautioned that the stakes remain exceptionally high for the fast bowler as he steps back onto the global stage. Success could pave the way for other seasoned campaigners to receive fair consideration from national selectors, whereas struggles might validate cautious selection policies regarding older athletes. Bhuvneshwar Kumar will aim to translate his dominant domestic form into immediate success when the five-match series against New Zealand gets underway in Christchurch.
