Johan Manzambi reminded Newcastle United exactly what they missed out on by heading in the only goal of the game to secure a hard-fought 1-0 victory for Aston Villa at St James’ Park on Saturday. The Switzerland midfielder, who celebrated his 21st birthday during the week, was heavily linked with a move to the north east before opting to join Unai Emery’s side in a club-record deal worth over fifty million pounds in the summer transfer window.
Match Highlights and Impact
Manzambi broke the deadlock in the northeast after timing his run perfectly to meet an excellent delivery from Joao Gomes, nodding home unmarked from eight yards out. The strike continues a stellar start to life in English football for the young midfielder, who has already found the back of the net against Tottenham Hotspur and Fenerbahce since making his debut in September.
- Johan Manzambi scored his third goal for Aston Villa to seal the 1-0 win against Newcastle.
- The midfielder previously turned down a move to St James’ Park in favor of joining Villa Park.
- Villa manager Unai Emery praised Manzambi’s exceptional impact, physical presence, and footballing intelligence.
- The victory extends Aston Villa’s unbeaten run across all competitions to five matches.
What Comes Next for Villa
The narrow triumph lifts Aston Villa up to twelfth place in the Premier League standings and provides massive momentum following a challenging start to the domestic campaign that saw them pick up just one point from their opening four fixtures. Manager Unai Emery admitted that the team needed to rebuild confidence after losing several high-profile players following their appearance in the Europa League final last season. With a revamped squad featuring the likes of Manzambi and fellow summer arrival Nicolas Jackson, Villa are beginning to find consistency. The team will now turn their attention back to European action as they prepare to host Norwegian outfit Viking in the Champions League on Wednesday, before facing a stern test against reigning powerhouse Manchester City in the Premier League next weekend.
