World Cup

It was a heartbreak for tens of thousands of fans donning blue Jersey at Narendra Modi stadium in Ahmedabad, as Australia beat India by 6 wickets in the final of the ICC Cricket World Cup.

Australian captain Pat Cummins chose to field after winning the toss. India lost Shubman Gill for 4 to Mitchell Starc. Captain Rohit Sharma was in good form when he was caught out by a brilliant catch by Travis Head off Glen Maxwell. India lost Shreyas Iyer (4) while adding 5 runs to total and was suddenly in a rough spot.

Kohli and Kl Rahul managed to surf through without immediate loss of another wicket. Kohli was caught inside-edge at 54 by a brilliant bowl from Pat Cummins. Jadeja who came in next couldn’t score well and was dismissed at 9. India was struggling at 203-6 as Kl Rahul was dismissed by Starc at 66.

The only main batter left was Surya Kumar Yadav, but he couldn’t score well when it was needed and was out for 18 (28) after the wickets of Shami (6) and Bumrah (1). Kuldeep (10) and Siraj (9) completed 50 overs with a total of 240/10. Starc took 3 wickets and Cummins and Hazlewood took 2 each.

The Australian reply was not good at the beginning as they lost Warner (7) early to Shami. M Marsh was caught by Kl Rahul off Bumrah at 15 and Smith (4) also fell lbw to Bumrah. Australia was at 47-3 at this moment and was expecting the inevitable. Indian fans and players looked overjoyed. But it didn’t last much as the 2023 test World Cup hero T Head (137) came up with a brilliant knock and Indian bowlers had no reply.

Head and Labuschagne (58) built up a winning partnership of 142 runs and that was decisive in this final, as Australia beat India by 6 wickets to clinch their 6th World Cup title. Siraj was inconsolable and all the players had tears in their eyes. Narendra Modi presented the trophy to the Winners and this drew the curtains to the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023.
