South Africa beat Australia

Former world champions Australia lost their second consecutive match in ICC Cricket World Cup 2023.

Australia chose to bowl first at AB Vajpayee Cricket Stadium, Lucknow. South Africa built a formidable opening partnership of 108 runs before Bavuma (35) was taken by Maxwell. One down Van der Dussen couldn’t contribute much today and was taken by Adam Zampa at 26. Opener Quinton de Kock hit a brilliant century before being bowled by Maxwell at 109. De Kock hit 8 fours and 5 sixes.

After the departure of de Kock, wickets kept falling in timely intervals. Glenn Maxwell gave just 34 runs in 10 overs and took 2 crucial wickets. South Africa posted a total of 311/7 in 50 overs. Markram took 56. Klaasen 29 and Jansen 26 are other scorers for SA.

In reply, Australia started better than how it fared against India in the first match. But soon it turned disastrous. Mitchell Marsh (7) was caught off Marco Jansen when total score was at 27. Australia couldn’t find rhythm once again and wickets started to fall like a deck of cards.

David Warner (13), Steven Smith (19), Josh Inglis (5), Maxwell (3), and Stoinis (5), were out within the first 18 overs inside 100 runs in total. They were 70 then. Labuschagne (46) and Starc (27) defended from another immediate blow. But their defense was broken when Stark fell for Jansen. Labuschagne too departed shortly and the defeat was completed after a short innings from Pat Cummins (22) at 177 in 40 overs.

Rabada took 3 for 33, K Maharaj 2 for 30, Shamsi 2 for 38, Jansen 2 for 54. Quinton de Kock was adjudged the player of the match.
