The controversial LIV Golf circuit announced it will shut down permanently following five turbulent years that completely transformed the landscape of professional golf. Officials confirmed Thursday that plans to relaunch the competition under a restructured format have officially collapsed after key financial backers withdrew from the project. Consequently, the organization will begin liquidating its remaining assets in bankruptcy court starting Monday.

  • LIV Golf confirmed the shutdown after talks to implement a restructuring agreement failed.
  • Lead investor BC Partners Credit withdrew from the project following player departures.
  • Bankruptcy filings show liabilities between five hundred million and one billion dollars.
  • Top players including Jon Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau hold significant unsecured claims.

Financial Collapse and Failed Relaunch

Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund previously poured billions into the breakaway tour since its inception in 2022. However, financial backing stopped earlier this year before the organization filed for bankruptcy protection in September. Organizers attempted a relaunch called LIV 2.0 with a reduced schedule and equity stakes for participants. BC Partners Credit pledged initial funding of three hundred million dollars to support the transition.

Negotiations collapsed because several star competitors publicly withdrew from the revamped circuit in recent weeks. Meanwhile, major stakeholders failed to reach mutually acceptable terms regarding the new business model. Chief Executive Scott O’Neil described building the global platform as the round of a lifetime despite the sudden end. Company representatives noted they remain open to third-party alternatives during the winding-down process.

Liabilities and Creditor Claims

Court documents reveal that the organization currently owes substantial sums to at least one thousand creditors. Several prominent athletes hold the largest unsecured claims against the defunct circuit for past-due payments. Star golfers Jon Rahm, Bryson DeChambeau, and Dustin Johnson each face claims exceeding five million dollars. Asset liquidation will address outstanding financial obligations while concluding the league’s operations.

Legal representatives outlined the liquidation schedule during a bankruptcy hearing in New Jersey. Officials intend to manage an orderly wind-down to protect remaining corporate value. Observers note that the closure marks a dramatic conclusion to an era of heavy spending in professional sports. The departure of the circuit leaves traditional tours to reclaim their former status within the sport.
