The Indian women’s cricket team has outlined a bold new tactical blueprint focusing on a fearless yet intelligent brand of cricket. Vice-captain Shafali Verma confirmed the team’s revised mindset as preparations ramp up for the upcoming Women’s Champions Trophy scheduled to take place at home early next year.

India is set to host Zimbabwe in an upcoming bilateral series consisting of three T20 internationals followed by three ODIs in Vadodara. The white-ball fixtures serve as crucial match practice for the squad as they fine-tune combinations and player roles ahead of the major International Cricket Council tournament in February.

Tactical Evolution and Squad Preparations

Addressing reporters ahead of the series opener, the opening batter emphasized that extensive team meetings have helped establish clear expectations across the playing XI. The management aims to blend aggressive strokeplay with smart situational awareness to maintain momentum throughout every game.

  • India will play Zimbabwe in a historic bilateral series featuring three T20Is and three ODIs.
  • Vice-captain Shafali Verma stressed the importance of pairing fearless batting with smart match awareness.
  • The team is adjusting to leadership changes following Harmanpreet Kaur’s departure, with Smriti Mandhana taking over as captain across formats.
  • Verma highlighted her personal development, noting hard work on fitness, consistency, and expanding her bowling role for Haryana.

Leadership Transition and Personal Growth

The upcoming fixtures mark a new chapter for the national team following a transition in the leadership group. While Smriti Mandhana assumes captaincy duties across formats, Verma and Deepti Sharma have taken up vice-captaincy responsibilities in T20Is and ODIs respectively. Reflecting on the legacy of former skipper Harmanpreet Kaur, Verma acknowledged the significant growth the team achieved under her guidance.

On a personal level, the explosive batter discussed her return to form after spending time away from the national setup. Verma explained that a rigorous self-analysis in 2025 allowed her to patch technical vulnerabilities against short balls and improve her back-foot play against spinners. Alongside her primary batting duties, Verma also noted her readiness to contribute with the ball, having regularly bowled in domestic cricket since 2021.
