Former India batsman and dual Indian Premier League winner Robin Uthappa has been officially appointed as the batting coach of the Mumbai Indians ahead of the upcoming tournament. The franchise announced a sweeping overhaul of their backroom staff following the recent appointment of Kieron Pollard as the new head coach, replacing Mahela Jayawardene.
Alongside Uthappa, the franchise has brought in several other prominent former players to strengthen the support staff. Former New Zealand fast bowler Mitchell McClenaghan takes over as the bowling coach, T Dilip joins as the fielding coach, and former India seamer Dhawal Kulkarni steps in as the development bowling coach.
Coaching Staff Restructuring
The latest appointments come in the wake of significant departures from the coaching setup. Mumbai Indians recently parted ways with former bowling coaches Lasith Malinga and Paras Mhambrey, as well as fielding coach Carl Hopkinson, paving the way for a fresh strategic direction under Pollard and his new team.
- Robin Uthappa returns to the franchise after having played his inaugural IPL season with Mumbai Indians in 2008.
- Mitchell McClenaghan brings extensive experience from his five seasons as an active player with the franchise between 2015 and 2019.
- Dhawal Kulkarni adds local developmental expertise having previously represented the team across multiple stints.
- The new coaching unit aims to revitalize the squad following recent leadership changes within the franchise.
Playing Legacies and Franchise History
Uthappa enjoyed a storied playing career in the league, accumulating 4,952 runs across 205 matches. After his initial stint with Mumbai in 2008, he went on to represent five different franchises, notably lifting the trophy with the Kolkata Knight Riders in 2014 and the Chennai Super Kings in 2021. McClenaghan was an instrumental figure during his playing days with Mumbai, claiming 71 wickets in 56 matches and playing a crucial role in their championship-winning campaigns in 2015 and 2019. Kulkarni also brings deep institutional knowledge, having featured for the team during their early titles from 2008 to 2013, before returning for the 2020 and 2021 seasons. The revamped coaching staff will look to channel this wealth of championship experience into developing younger talent and orchestrating a strong campaign for the upcoming season.
