Manchester City Progress After Penalty Drama
Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca has firmly backed Gianluigi Donnarumma as his undisputed first-choice goalkeeper despite Geronimo Rulli delivering a stunning penalty shootout performance against Brighton in the Carabao Cup. The holders progressed to the quarter-finals of the domestic competition after a dramatic encounter finished 2-2 in normal time.
Rulli, who returned to the club in the summer from Marseille for a modest fee of £1.7m to serve as a back-up, pushed his claims with vital saves. The veteran goalkeeper dived full stretch to his left to deny Yasin Ayari and Lewis Dunk from the spot. Rulli also produced a crucial fingertip save in the second half to stop Georginio Rutter from scoring, ensuring his side survived a major scare.
- Rulli saved penalties from Yasin Ayari and Lewis Dunk in the shootout.
- The match ended 2-2 in normal time after goals from Malick Yalcouye, Georginio Rutter, Mateo Kovacic and Vitor Reis.
- Donnarumma was given three days off to recover energy following recent scrutiny over his form.
- Manchester City will face Bradford in the quarter-finals of the tournament.
Managerial Stance And Upcoming Fixtures
Addressing the media after the match, Maresca dismissed any suggestion that Rulli could usurp the Italy captain for the upcoming Premier League fixture against the same opposition. The manager confirmed that Donnarumma would immediately return to the starting XI this weekend. Maresca made nine changes to his side following a defeat against Aston Villa, resting several key players to manage fatigue during a demanding stretch of the season.
The victory highlights the depth within the squad as City continue their pursuit of domestic silverware under their new managerial setup. Maresca acknowledged that while Donnarumma has made occasional errors in recent weeks, his overall contributions in building up play remain valuable. The holders will now turn their attention back to league action before preparing for their upcoming quarter-final clash against Bradford in the latter stages of the competition.
