Liverpool manager gamble on young French centre-back Jeremy Jacquet is already paying massive dividends as the £60m summer signing from Rennes establishes himself as a defensive bedrock at Anfield. Despite arriving with limited Ligue 1 experience and coming off a year disrupted by a broken shoulder and knee issues, the 21-year-old has adapted seamlessly to the rigors of English football. No outfield player at the club has featured for more minutes than Jacquet this season, with the defender starting every single match in both the Premier League and the Champions League under the watchful eye of the coaching staff.
Defensive Dominance and Instant Impact
The transition to the Premier League traditionally takes time, but Jacquet has bypassed the usual adjustment period with a series of commanding displays at the heart of the Liverpool defense. Alongside veteran partner Virgil van Dijk, the Frenchman has already recorded four clean sheets in the top flight while exhibiting elite defensive metrics across the board.
- Jacquet has played 956 minutes this season, trailing only goalkeeper Alisson in total playing time for the club.
- He currently ranks fourth in the Premier League for interceptions with 15 successful defensive interventions.
- The defender has made 10 crucial blocks and leads all Liverpool teammates with 19 successful tackles.
- His stellar club form earned him a senior international debut for France, drawing high praise from manager Zinedine Zidane.
Building the Future at Anfield
The path to Merseyside could have taken a very different turn had Liverpool successfully pursued Leny Yoro or if Chelsea had managed to secure the youngster’s signature during winter negotiations. Instead, sporting director Richard Hughes waited patiently to lock down the talent, and the investment is already looking like a masterstroke. With senior professionals like Van Dijk and Ronald Araujo guiding him on the pitch, combined with his maturity off it, Jacquet has quickly evolved from an expensive summer gamble into one of the first names on the team sheet.
