Chennai Super Kings are reportedly in advanced discussions to appoint former England off-spinner Gareth Batty as their new batting coach ahead of the upcoming Indian Premier League season. This significant development follows closely on the heels of the franchise appointing former India fast bowler Zaheer Khan as their new head coach following a major shakeup in the team’s backroom staff.
The overhaul of the coaching setup became necessary after Stephen Fleming and the franchise mutually parted ways earlier this year, ending an illustrious 18-year association that laid the foundation for the team’s historic success in the tournament. Franchise officials are working quickly to assemble a fresh and dynamic coaching team capable of steering the former champions back to the pinnacle of domestic T20 cricket.
- Chennai Super Kings target Gareth Batty as their batting coach ahead of the IPL 2027 season.
- The franchise previously appointed former India pacer Zaheer Khan as head coach.
- Batty currently serves as the head coach of Surrey, guiding them to multiple County Championship titles.
- CSK leadership expects to make a formal announcement regarding the support staff in the coming days.
Coaching Pedigree and County Success
Gareth Batty brings a wealth of tactical experience to the table, having established a stellar reputation in English domestic circles. During his tenure as head coach of Surrey, Batty successfully led the county side to three consecutive County Championship titles, showcasing a sharp strategic mind and an ability to nurture top-tier batting talent. His potential arrival signals a modern tactical shift for the franchise as they prepare for the upcoming player auction and squad rebuilding phase.
Upcoming Franchise Milestones
The coaching appointments arrive at a crucial juncture for the franchise as they prepare for the IPL 2027 mini-auction, scheduled to take place in Goa on December 16. Franchise executives face a strict player retention deadline of November 15, after which the league will distribute the registered player pool for final shortlisting. Team management hopes to finalize all support staff roles before turning full attention to squad construction and strategic bidding.
