Veteran all-rounder Kieron Pollard has officially withdrawn from the upcoming SA20 season, stepping away from his agreement with the Joburg Super Kings. The decision comes shortly after his high-profile promotion to the position of head coach for the Mumbai Indians franchise ahead of the next Indian Premier League campaign.

Joburg Super Kings secured Pollard’s services for Rand 1.5 million during the recent league auction. However, following discussions, the franchise has confirmed that the player will not join the squad for the 2027 tournament, freeing up the management to recruit an external replacement from outside the original auction pool.

  • Kieron Pollard opted out of his SA20 contract with Joburg Super Kings ahead of the 2027 tournament.
  • The decision follows his recent appointment as head coach for the Mumbai Indians.
  • JSK paid Rand 1.5 million for his services at the auction and can now sign an external replacement.
  • Pollard previously represented sister franchise MI Cape Town during the 2024 and 2025-26 seasons.

Franchise Commitments and History

Pollard’s deep association with the Mumbai Indians umbrella spans multiple global T20 leagues. Having previously turned out for MI Cape Town across two seasons, where he accumulated 207 runs in 12 appearances at a strike rate of 171.07, his potential appearance for a rival SA20 franchise generated significant discussion before this withdrawal. The seasoned campaigner also maintains leadership and playing roles with other group-owned teams including MI New York, MI Emirates, and MI London.

Milestones and Upcoming Schedule

Despite transitioning into coaching roles, the 39-year-old remains a prominent active player in domestic T20 circuits worldwide, having most recently featured for the Trinbago Knight Riders in the Caribbean Premier League. He stands just one run shy of joining Jos Buttler as the only players to cross the milestone of 15,000 career runs in the shortest format. The upcoming SA20 competition is scheduled to commence on January 17, 2027.
