Afghanistan head coach Richard Pybus has strongly praised his side’s bowling depth, highlighting that star leg-spinner Rashid Khan operates within a deeply competent and varied attack. The remarks followed Afghanistan’s comprehensive seven-wicket victory over Zimbabwe in the ODI tri-series final held in Sharjah.

While Rashid starred with figures of 3/41 in the title clash—extending his impressive sequence of taking at least three wickets in six consecutive One-Day Internationals—Pybus was quick to emphasize that the team’s success stems from collective contributions rather than individual brilliance alone. The victory capped off an impressive run for the squad in challenging UAE conditions.

Match Dominance and Collective Effort

During the final encounter, Afghanistan’s disciplined bowling unit restricted Zimbabwe to a modest total of 169 runs in 43.3 overs. In response, the batting lineup chased down the target comfortably in 34.3 overs, losing only three wickets. Ibrahim Zadran anchored the chase with an unbeaten 70, while newly appointed captain Rahmat Shah added 43 runs to secure the trophy.

  • Rashid Khan claimed 3/41 in the final, marking his sixth consecutive ODI with three or more wickets.
  • Ibrahim Zadran scored an unbeaten 70 runs to guide the chase safely home.
  • Afghanistan bowled out Zimbabwe for 169 before reaching the target in 34.3 overs.
  • Captain Rahmat Shah extended his winning streak in ODIs to seven consecutive matches since taking over leadership.

Building for the Future

Pybus also took the opportunity to commend Rahmat Shah’s calm and assured leadership style since stepping into the captaincy role. The coach noted that Rahmat has successfully handled the dual responsibility of leading the side and contributing effectively with the bat. However, Pybus stressed that for Afghanistan to continue developing as a competitive force in international cricket, the team requires more consistent opportunities to test themselves against higher-ranked Full Member nations across all formats.
