New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner has acknowledged the immense depth and fierce competition within the Indian squad while reserving high praise for teenage opening batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. As the Black Caps prepare for their upcoming five-match T20I series against India starting in Christchurch, attention has naturally turned to the composition of the visiting lineup and how they plan to accommodate their emerging young talent.
Sooryavanshi missed out on selection for all five matches during India’s recent series against the West Indies, remaining on the bench despite his reputation as one of the most explosive young openers in world cricket. Addressing reporters on the eve of the opening fixture, Santner noted that while the management under Gautam Gambhir faces tough choices due to the wealth of available options, opposing teams are fully aware of the threat the fifteen-year-old poses.
Tactical Preparation and Series Context
Santner confirmed that New Zealand’s coaching staff and bowling unit have formulated specific plans for Sooryavanshi should he break into the playing eleven during the ongoing tour. Drawing from previous encounters in the Indian Premier League, the New Zealand skipper highlighted the aggressive intent and destructive power that the youngster brings to the crease at the top of the order.
