Seasoned Indian sprinter Simran Sharma delivered a stellar performance to claim the gold medal while setting a new Games record in the women’s 200m T12 event at the Asian Para Games in Nagoya on Tuesday. Tejalben Damor, competing in her maiden continental showpiece, added to India’s medal tally by securing a brilliant bronze in the same race.

  • Simran Sharma crossed the finish line with a timing of 24.80 seconds to secure the gold medal.
  • Iran’s Hajar Safarzadeh finished second with a timing of 25.02 seconds to take the silver.
  • Tejalben Damor claimed the bronze medal on her international debut by clocking 25.23 seconds.
  • The T12 classification at the athletic competition is designated for athletes experiencing moderate visual impairment.

Dominant Display on the Track

Simran showcased remarkable resilience and speed on the track despite facing challenging pre-race conditions regarding her dietary routine and physical recovery following the heat races. Running alongside her new guide Shivam, the 26-year-old athlete managed to outpace her competitors comfortably. The victory marks a significant milestone in her ongoing career resurgence following a successful campaign at the Paris Paralympics. Her compatriot Tejalben also demonstrated immense potential, overcoming financial hardships and personal hurdles to secure a podium finish on her very first appearance at the continental level.

Looking Ahead to Upcoming Events

Following their impressive podium finishes in the 200m sprint, both athletes are preparing for further challenges at the ongoing multi-sport competition in Japan. Simran is scheduled to participate in the upcoming 100m sprint competition, where she previously secured a silver medal in the past edition. Meanwhile, Tejalben will shift her focus towards the 400m event, which stands as her favoured discipline. Both competitors expressed high confidence that their current form and momentum will translate into more success for the national contingent in the remaining days of the games.
