Pakistan recovered from a shaky start to post a competitive total of 302 for 9 against England in the opening match of their ODI tri-series campaign at Rawalpindi on Monday. After being asked to bat first on a true surface, the hosts stumbled to 81 for 4 in the 19th over before a crucial lower-order fightback guided them past the 300-run mark.
Innings Recovery and Key Partnerships
Hasan Nawaz played a stellar knock, scoring a career-best 79 runs from 74 deliveries to anchor the innings. He found a reliable partner in Arafat Minhas, who contributed a brisk 59 off 53 balls, bringing up his maiden international half-century. The pair ignited the innings with a vital fifth-wicket partnership worth 78 runs. Later, Faheem Ashraf chipped in with an aggressive 39, helping the hosts finish strongly despite a late flurry of wickets.
- Hasan Nawaz top-scored for Pakistan with 79 runs, including four sixes.
- Arafat Minhas added 59 runs to record his first international fifty.
- Sonny Baker was the pick of the England bowlers, taking 3-65.
- England were sloppy in the field, dropping Nawaz and Minhas multiple times.
England Bowling Performance and Missed Chances
England made an ideal start after winning the toss and electing to field, utilizing movement and disciplined lines to dismantle Pakistan’s top order. Sonny Baker spearheaded the attack with career-best figures of 3 for 65, while Will Jacks and Adil Rashid kept the scoring rate in check during the middle overs. However, the visitors failed to capitalize on their early dominance due to a lackluster fielding display, giving multiple reprieves to both Nawaz and Minhas.
Chasing a target of 303, England will need to overcome history, as tracking down a score in excess of 300 in foreign conditions presents a stern test for their batting lineup. The match serves as a crucial fixture in both teams’ preparations leading up to major limited-overs tournaments.
