India delivered a dominant all-around performance in Raipur on Sunday, defeating Zimbabwe by nine wickets in the second women’s T20I to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series. Electing to bat first, Zimbabwe struggled against a disciplined Indian bowling attack and were restricted to a modest total of 102 for eight in their allotted twenty overs.
Bowling Collapse and Innings Context
The visiting side never found any rhythm during their innings, managing just 20 runs during the Powerplay while losing opener Kelis Ndhlovu for an eleven-ball duck. Pacer Nandani Sharma provided the early breakthrough, while off-spinner Niki Prasad dismantled the middle order with impressive figures of two for seven. Captain Josephine Nkomo, who stayed unbeaten on 27, and Chipo Tiripano, who contributed 34 runs from 32 balls, stitched together a 45-run fourth-wicket partnership to stabilize the innings temporarily. However, disciplined bowling ensured the tourists could not accelerate in the death overs.
Swift Chase and Series Triumph
Chasing a target of 103, India made light work of the opposition courtesy of a blistering opening partnership between Shafali Verma and newly appointed captain Smriti Mandhana. Shafali smashed a rapid 55 off just 25 deliveries, reaching her half-century in style by hitting off-spinner Beloved Biza for a maximum. Mandhana anchored the other end with an unbeaten 47, finishing the contest in style with an inside-out six off Olinder Chare.
- India chased down the target of 103 in a mere 8.5 overs to win by nine wickets.
- Shafali Verma recorded her 22nd T20I half-century with a 25-ball 55.
- Niki Prasad claimed figures of 2/7 to derail the Zimbabwe middle order.
- Smriti Mandhana sealed her full-time captaincy debut series with an unbeaten 47.
Match Outcome
The emphatic nine-wicket victory ensures India wrap up the three-match series with a game to spare, giving Mandhana a perfect start to her leadership tenure. The final fixture will offer the visitors a chance to salvage pride before the tour concludes.
