Former Sri Lanka pace spearhead Chaminda Vaas has officially been appointed as the fast-bowling coach of the Delhi Capitals ahead of the upcoming Indian Premier League season. The high-profile addition to the coaching staff follows a series of major structural changes within the franchise, which includes Sourav Ganguly taking over as the head coach and Yuvraj Singh joining as the assistant and batting coach.
Vaas brings a wealth of international coaching experience to the franchise setup, having previously worked with national teams including Sri Lanka, New Zealand, and Ireland. His appointment highlights the franchise’s intent to revamp their backroom team following a disappointing campaign that saw them finish sixth on the league table. Franchise officials confirmed that Vaas, along with incoming spin-bowling coach Amit Mishra, has already begun working closely with the team’s academy players in Delhi.
Coaching Philosophy and Team Strategy
Addressing his new role, Vaas emphasized that he prefers giving extensive freedom to his fast bowlers while helping them understand their own strengths and field placements. The legendary left-arm pacer stressed that modern bowlers must possess clear match awareness and execute their own plans on the field, with the coaching staff stepping in to provide guidance during critical phases of the game.
- Chaminda Vaas named Delhi Capitals fast-bowling coach for the upcoming IPL season.
- Sourav Ganguly and Yuvraj Singh were also recently added to the revamped coaching staff.
- Vaas has prior international coaching stints with Sri Lanka, New Zealand, and Ireland.
- The franchise is aiming for a stronger performance following a sixth-place finish in the previous edition.
Franchise Restructuring and Future Outlook
The overhaul of the coaching staff aligns with an alternating operational arrangement between the franchise’s co-owners, GMR Sports and Jindal South West Sports, which grants each group control over operations in alternating cycles. Alongside the coaching changes, the franchise has also been active in the player trading window, adjusting their roster by swapping key players to balance the squad. With an experienced coaching lineup now firmly in place, the management hopes to secure their maiden tournament trophy in the upcoming campaign.
