Spain Hit With Partial Stadium Closure and Fine Over Discriminatory Chants

Spain have been penalized with a partial stadium closure and a financial fine following discriminatory chants directed against Muslims during an international friendly fixture against Egypt. World football’s governing body took disciplinary action after supporters engaged in xenophobic chanting at the RCDE Stadium in Barcelona.

The incident occurred on March 31 during a match that ultimately ended in a scoreless 0-0 draw. Warnings regarding the unacceptable behavior were displayed on the stadium screens on multiple occasions, which elicited whistles from portions of the attending crowd. Although the Spanish Football Association attempted to argue that the vocal outbursts were harmless, the disciplinary committee firmly rejected the defense and proceeded with sanctions.

Sanctions and Penalties Imposed

Under the ruling issued by the disciplinary panel, Spain must enforce a 15 percent capacity reduction at their upcoming international friendly fixture. The governing body stipulated specific conditions regarding the punishment:

  • Fifteen percent of the stadium capacity must remain closed for the next home friendly match.
  • The closed sections must be implemented primarily within the stands located behind the goals.
  • The federation may petition to fill those specific seats with approved community groups, schools, families, and anti-discrimination organizations.
  • A financial penalty of $20,000 has been levied against the Spanish governing body.

Schedule Impact and Reactions

The timing of the stadium restriction remains dependent on the national team’s upcoming fixture commitments. If the squad qualifies for the finals of the UEFA Nations League, the enforcement of the stadium ban will be pushed back to coincide with the European Championship qualifying fixtures scheduled for the autumn. Team officials and coaching staff strongly condemned the behavior of the supporters involved, labeling the actions as completely intolerable.

Meanwhile, the Egyptian Football Association also issued a formal statement strongly denouncing the repugnant acts of racism. However, representatives emphasized that the misconduct of a small contingent of supporters would not negatively impact the strong diplomatic and sporting relations shared between the two national federations moving forward.
